Tiger
Woods
PGA Tour 2004
I'm a big fan of Golf games, I'm not
sure why as I'm not a fan of golf but
there you go. I figured this would be
a case of playing Tiger and not much
else but you actually get to choose
who you want to play out of a selection
including the likes of Tiger (obviously),
John Daly, Solita Lopez and a few others.
As well as the choices available to
you here you also get quite a few big
name courses including St Andrews which
I mention purely because I live in Scotland
and it's the home of Golf... apparently.
There's weather options, hole options,
infact there's more options than you
can poke a golf club at....
Controlling your golfer actually
is not that disimilar to some of the
console titles that use a control pad,
the direction pad is used to swing,
'down' to ready the swing and a well
timed 'up' to hit the ball. You can
also add variations to the swing such
as slicing it or hooking it etc. All
in all the controls are ok and not overly
complicated but they could be better,
still there should be no pulling contorted
faces as you squeeze in a few rounds
of golf on the commute to work
Graphically Tiger Woods PGA
Tour is sweet but it is at the end of
the day 'just' another golf title, you've
got your usual behind the player swing
shots, your overhead map view so you
can see where the ball is likely to
go, your course graphic screens to add
to the feel and so on and so forth.
Sound ... well... it's a golf
game, what do you want / expect me to
say? Swoosh, plop etc. Being a golf
game, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 doesn't
come with an amazing soundtrack but
it does have occasional voiceovers,
which are tinny and unclear and would
probably have been better left out.
There's also the usual looped music.
Gameplay is actually very engaging.
Even though it doesn't feel like you're
really using much skill overall to make
your shots, the game does play well
and it is fun as far as golf games go.
I'm not sure it's the kind of game you'd
want to play for hours and hours on
end but it certainly would occupy you
whilst you're on the move. Now and again
you'll be a little confused at why one
shot didn't work when the last one did
but this is very rare so nothing worth
worrying about.
Multiplayer is partially as
yet un reviewed since sadly I only have
one copy of the game so multiple handset
multi player is away out the window,
however, and this is where Tiger Woods
is pretty sweet, you can play multi
player with one handset just passing
it between you and your pal between
shots... nice.
Female Gamer Angle is catered
for by the way of Solita Lopez, a female
character whose stats aren't that great
unfortunately but at least shes a woman.
The game itself isn't really aimed more
at one gender than another and theres
plenty there to keep both sexes interested.
Overall Tiger Woods PGA isn't
a bad game, it just isn't a brilliant
game either. Golf enthusiasts with an
N-Gage have little choice given this
is presently the N-Gage's only foray
into the sport but at least you're not
getting stuck with a complete turkey,
it is an above average title and you'll
have fun with the single player mode
unlocking extras etc, provided of course
you can get to grips with that directional
pad swing.
