ThumbBandits.com : Welcome

AUGUST 2004

Violet Berlin
(Female Gamer Extraordinaire UK)

After taking member submissions for our next Honorary Oakley Violets name was hurled about by UKers. Although perhaps not famous outside the UK, Violet is a gaming institution therein. She's been the face of female gaming for many a year and continues to be so today! This is why we feel she is a great addition to the the Honorary Oakley listing. Violet Berlin is a role model for many girls / women wanting to break into the games industry and this is why she is Thumb Bandits Honorary Oakley for the month of August 2004.

Let's take a closer look at the woman herself.....

Violet Berlin - A quick bio:
Name: Violet Berlin
Birthdate: Hmm we believe around 1969
Birthplace: Zonguldak, Turkey
Raised: the Midlands, Sussex and West London
Presently Resides: North London with her partner Gareth Jones and children

Looking at Violets resume of work it's easy to see she's a smart and talented lady. Some of her Television work includes: The Big Bang (ITV) Just completed its 6th year. Violet builds working machines from scrap and grows entities with a life of their own from household chemicals. Also, dramatic moments from history re-enacted, plus an interactive quiz. Tech (Network Of The World) Through 2000 and 2001, Violet presented this daily technology magazine looking at all aspects of the New Media Age. Game-Pad (Bravo). Peak-time interactive entertainment magazine, currently airing on Bravo. Follow-up to Game-Spot, Violet's hit video games series shown in 2000. One Small Step (Channel 4) Alongside Jon Snow, Violet hosted the 4 hour live re-enactment of the moon landing at its 30th anniversary. Bad Influence! (ITV) (1992-1996) Hi-tech youth magazine show. A “Tomorrow's World” for teenagers. Lead to a spin-off series for children: Bad Level 10 (TCC). The Great Computer Challenge (YTV). Family guide to computers, ran for 2 years. The Making Of Inferno (Retail video) Documentary on making a computer game.

Violet has presented: the CITV Live Links for ITV in the afternoons; natural history show WildBunch (BBC1); live kids magazine, Saturday Disney (ITV); a weekly kids computer strand on GMTV (ITV); regular slots on This Morning (ITV); live youth magazine, Ouch! (TCC); live youth magazine, Cool Cube (Sky). Also, an educational retail video for young children, sKIDoo. Plus, Head To Head; The A-Z of Computer & Video Games; CheatFlash! All devised by Violet for TCC & produced by Violet's previous TV company, Curious TV.
WOW!.
As you can tell from her list of work she's a bit of a gaming and technology guru and it is with this in mind that we have chosen Violet Berlin to be represented in our Oakley hall of fame! Violet herself let us know that one of her favourite films is Annie Get Your Gun and we liked this tie in also.

Violet can be seen hosting Gamepad 4 at present, a show all about gaming. The great thing about this is, she's not JUST eyecandy (although she is nice to look at - very cool), she actually knows about gaming and this comes across extremely well even to someone who may not have heard of her before (ie a non UKer as I was).

For all the reasons above and more we have chosen Violet Berlin, Presenter, Writer, Producer and all round cool female gaming guru to be our Honorary Oakley for the month of August 2004.
Violet Berlin we salute you!

And that is why Violet Berlin is Thumb Bandits Honorary Oakley for the Month of August 2004!
