Spiderman
2
Spidey zips out his webs onto the N-Gage
in this movie tie in title. Oh dear,
I've done it now haven't I boys and
girls, I've said those dreaded words
'Movie Tie In', so you know what to
expect is coming, let's take a closer
look at Spiderman 2 on the Nokia N-Gage.....
After a failed experiment turns Dr.
Otto Octavius (aka Dr Octopus) into
a monster, the egomaniacal scientist
will stop at nothing until he exacts
the ultimate revenge on the one he holds
responsible for humiliating him: Spider-Man.
Controlling spidey differs
dependent on the level, I found the
3D sections lacked concise control but
given the nature of the game it made
little difference overall given it was
a doddle to finish the 3D levels. Their's
not an abundance of buttons either which
made life easier.
Graphically this title once
again suffers in the 3D levels. Whilst
the 2D sections are sharp and have that
cool retro look and feel, the 3D sections
at times suffer from framerate problems
and an abysmal polygon count, in plain
english the 3D sections look jaggy and
unrefined and at times chugged along
rather than smoothly flowing as this
titles big brothers in the console market
manage.
Sound is not too bad, you have
all the expected effects noises like
punches, kicks etc, and the music isn't
overly droning. All up, although it's
nothing new or outstanding, it does
the job it's meant to and doesn't take
away from the on screen action.
Gameplay again really must be
split into two separate review sections
since the 2D and 3D sections of the
game are inherently different in their
gameplay characteristics. The 2D Sections
are fun, particularly if you're a bit
of an old skool gamer with a penchant
for side scrolling 2D beat em ups. The
same cannot be said for the 3D sequences,
which, given the plethora of problems
they suffer from graphically could not
be over quick enough for myself.
Female Gaming Angle suffers
from the usual complaint, it's spiderMAN,
it's not spiderwoman needless to say
and that is about all I can say about
that.
Overall what this title sets
out to do is a great idea and it's such
a sad case that it doesn't do it well
enough because the 3D sequences let
it down. I think perhaps if developer
Backbone Entertainment has stuck with
keeping this an old school 2D affair
this game would have been a contender.
The proble with the games industry now
is that they feel if it isn't 3D it's
just not good enough, well this gamer
says ptooey, we have more than enough
3D titles overflowing gaming shelves,
a little step back to the good old days
of 2D isn't bad, the 2D side scrollling
levels in this title show this is the
case since they harken back to the good
old days of the megadrive and SNES.
